“Integrity is choosing courage over comfort; choosing what is right over what is fun, fast or easy; and choosing to practice our values rather than simply processing them” (Unknown)
Often, we are faced with the situation of having to make a choice. It could be at work, university or a simple moment at the local store. Situations can sometimes become difficult or not to our liking and instinctively, or in haste, we may say or do things that we normally would not do; that go directly against our values and principles. It’s the pressure of the moment that tips us towards these strange, undesirable reactions.
Later, we realise that this was simply wrong and thoughts of rectifying the situation begin to appear.
Yeah… it happens, so how can we avoid falling into such ‘integrity busting’ reactions?
Here’s some simple guidelines:
Develop an attitude of being calm
You need to be in control of your thoughts, words and actions at all times. It takes time to master the art, but it can be done. Saying or doing things, that go against your values , is often a result of losing self-control when things get a bit stressful. Know what ticks you off and practise being calm and composed during these times.
The Truth…always
The foundation when it comes to integrity, is honesty. The easiest way to lose your dignity, is to be caught out on a lie, whether you at the workplace, in a relationship, with neighbours, or at home. All your years of effort and time, come crushing down, the moment you be dishonest. Think about it…all value you placed in any relationship becomes questionable. So, being truthful at all times and in all situations is a vital component when it comes to your integrity.
You don’t have to fit in
Socialising for the sake of it, or doing things that you don’t want to, doesn’t do much for your integrity. You should not compromise on any of your values and principles simply to please others or to be popular. Believe me, it comes back to ‘bite you’. You will often be faced with compromising situations in life’s journey, are you going to give in all the time..? Stick to what is right, even if it makes you uncomfortable, at a disadvantage or unpopular.
